Claire Foy to Lead BritBox U.K. Thriller ‘Marlow’

“The Crown” star Claire Foy is set to lead a new thriller from streamer BritBox U.K.

Eight-part thriller “Marlow,” from Motive Pictures and Endeavor Content, centers on feuding families the Marlows and the Wyatts, who have existed in the “Edgelands” of the Thames Estuary for centuries.

Foy stars as Evie Wyatt, who was born and bred in the Estuary and returns to the Edgelands — the place she lost her father to a firestorm 15 years ago — in search of answers. However, drawn back into conflict with the Marlow clan, Evie finds herself in a battle with its ageing patriarch, Tom Marlow.

The very British thriller draws on “ancient tales of revenge and fate” as well as local myths and legends. The series, which is due to go into production this fall, is created by BAFTA-winning screenwriter Tony Grisoni (“Southcliffe”) and Simon Maxwell (“Deep State”), who will both executive produce alongside Foy.

Motive Pictures was established in 2019 by CEO Maxwell, who was previously head of international drama at Channel 4. It is backed by Endeavor Content.

Foy said: “I’m delighted to be a part of this compelling thriller. Tony and Simon’s scripts are so evocative of place and redolent with atmosphere — and the twists, turns and mysteries at the heart of this drama are utterly gripping. Evie Wyatt is such a captivating, complex and beguiling character, much like the enigmatic ‘Edgelands’ which she calls home, and I can’t wait to get to step into her shoes.”

Will Harrison, managing director BritBox UK, said: “’Marlow’ is a daring and intriguing concept, and exactly the kind of original content we want to offer our subscribers. Working with the calibre of Claire Foy, Tony Grisoni, Simon Maxwell and the Motive team is a privilege and we can’t wait to get started.”

Maxwell and Grisoni added: “The Thames Estuary’s ‘Edgelands’ offer a unique and extraordinary world of mud, sea and infinite sky; of broken politics and dreams — the Thames mouth is at once a gateway to the world and the last wild frontier of our island existence. ‘Marlow’ is a uniquely homegrown saga, a character driven crime epic about where we’ve come from; who we are now; what we might become. We are thrilled to be working with the extraordinary talents of Claire Foy and, as the home for the boldest new British drama, BritBox is the perfect home for our show.”

Paul Bettany and Claire Foy to Headline A Very English Scandal Season 2

Paul Bettany and Claire Foy are about to become embroiled in quite the scandal.

The Wandavision and The Crown stars have signed on to A Very British Scandal, BBC One and Amazon Prime’s follow-up to A Very English Scandal, TVLine has learned.

Foy and Bettany will portray the Duchess and Duke of Argyll, aka the key players in one of Britain’s most salacious divorce cases of the 20th century. Per the official logline:

Famed for her charisma, beauty and style, Margaret (Foy), Duchess of Argyll, dominated the front pages as a divorcee featuring accusations of forgery, theft, violence, drug-taking, secret recording, bribery and an explicit Polaroid picture all played out in the white-hot glare of the 1960s media.

Sarah Phelps (Dublin Murders) wrote the series, which will unfold in three 60-minute episodes and which will investigate the role institutional misogyny played in how the duchess was shamed in society and vilified by the press and the judicial system.

“I’m so excited to work with [director] Anne [Sewitsky], Sarah and Paul on this extraordinary project,” Foy said via statement, “and to explore through this story how often shame, judgment and controversy surrounds a woman’s sexuality.”

Foy, Phelps and Sewitsky are among the series’ executive producers. A Very British Scandal will be available on Amazon Prime Video in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the United Kingdom.

The series’ predecessor, A Very English Scandal, starred Hugh Grant and Ben Whishaw and chronicled the events leading up to England’s Jeremy Thorpe imbroglio.

Claire Foy To Star In Adaptation Of Melissa Broder’s ‘The Pisces’; Gillian Robespierre Will Direct

Claire Foy has signed on to star in the upcoming feature, The Pisces, based on author Melissa Broder’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name. Broder and Gillian Robespierre penned the script that Robespierre will direct. Foy, who is the latest addition to the project, will play a PhD student plagued with writer’s block and romantic obsession.

The Pisces is centered on Lucy’s erotic infatuation with a merman. But as fantastical as that sounds sounds, it is more than just a lady-fishman love story. It’s an exploration of the boundaries between pleasure and possession, fantasy vs. reality and the way women choose the men in their lives.

Archer Gray’s Anne Carey developed the script with Broder and Robespierre. Carey and Amy Nauiokas will produce under their Archer Gray banner.

The novel was published in 2018 by Hogarth Press in the U.S. and Bloomsbury Publishing in the UK. Broder’s latest novel, Milk Fed, which will publish next month from Scribner in the U.S. and in March from Bloomsbury in the UK, and is currently in development with ABC Signature with Liz Tigelaar’s Best Day Ever producing.

Foy will next be seen in Will Sharpe’s Louis Wain alongside Benedict Cumberbatch for Amazon. Most recently, she finished shooting STXFilm’s English-language remake of the French thriller My Son alongside James McAvoy for director Christian Carion. Previously, she earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for her performance in Damien Chazelle’s First Man for Universal, opposite Ryan Gosling. In Netflix’s critically acclaimed series, The Crown, she earned her a Golden Globe award, a Primetime Emmy award, two Screen Actors Guild awards, and a BAFTA TV nomination.

Foy is represented by UTA and Oliver Singer at Independent Talent Group. Broder is represented by UTA, Lighthouse Management + Media, Meredith Kaffel Simonoff of DeFiore & Company and the law firm Ginsburg Daniels. Robespierre is represented by UTA and Tara Kole of Gang, Tyre, Ramer, Brown & Passman. Carey and Nauiokas are represented by attorney Victoria Cook at Frankfurt Kurnit Klein & Selz.

Claire Foy, Benedict Cumberbatch Team to Adapt Charlotte McConaghy Novel ‘Migrations’

Foy will star and executive produce while Cumberbatch will produce with his partners at SunnyMarch.

Claire Foy and Benedict Cumberbatch are teaming up to adapt the timely novel Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy.

The novel was highly sought after by a number of production banners and streamers as it offered a layered female protagonist in a unique setting, but it was Cumberbatch’s shingle, SunnyMarch, that secured the screen rights.

Foy will star and executive produce while Cumberbatch will produce along with SunnyMarch’s Adam Ackland and Leah Clarke.

The book, published by Flatiron Books in August, is both an intimate and epic story of a woman’s search for redemption in a world facing a slow death by climate change.

The tome focuses on a woman named Franny Stone who is tracking what may be the final migration of Arctic terns. When she hustles her way onto a small vessel of misfit fishermen and embarks on an odyssey through stormy seas, her dark past of love, loss, crime and motherhood unfolds in a ode to the wild places in and around us, and the extreme lengths one will go to for the people they love.

“Charlotte has created an utterly unique and beautiful story with a compelling and fascinating woman at its heart,” said Foy in a statement. “I couldn’t be more honoured or excited to help bring this truly remarkable novel to the screen.”

Foy garnered international acclaim, as well as an Emmy and Golden Globe, for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix’s The Crown. She has wrapped a starring turn alongside Cumberbatch in the upcoming period drama Louis Wain, set for release in 2021. The film was also co-produced by SunnyMarch. It was during that matchup that the two parties decided to find material they could work on together once more.

“We have been looking for an opportunity to collaborate again with Claire on something special that explores big themes and offers Claire an opportunity to portray a character the likes of which we have not seen before,” said SunnyMarch’s Clarke. “We are delighted to have found it in Charlotte’s undeniably cinematic Migrations and the character of Franny Stone. Together we all hope to bring you something very special.”

U.K.-based SunnyMarch, founded by Ackland and Cumberbatch, has three films in the can for a release in 2021. On top of Wain, there is The Courier, a Cold War spy thriller directed by Dominic Cooke and a currently untitled Kevin Macdonald film based on Mohamedou Ould Slahi’s best-selling memoir Guantanamo Diary. The company’s TV arm has a deal with StudioCanal and produced the BAFTA-winning, Emmy- and Golden Globe-nominated series Patrick Melrose for Sky and Showtime.

Migrations was a UTA special as the agency reps McConaghy, Foy, Cumberbatch and SunnyMarch.

McConaghy, who has a degree in screenwriting, is currently writing another novel that intersects her passions of nature and female empowerment, this one about about a biologist charged with using wolves to rewild a landscape and bring a forest back to life. She is additionally repped by Dystel, Goderich & Bourret.

Foy is additionally repped by Independent Talent Group. On top of UTA, SunnyMarch is repped by Conway van Gelder Grant, and Sloane Offer.

Claire Foy, James McAvoy to Star in ‘My Son’ Thriller

Claire Foy, James McAvoy to Star in ‘My Son’ Thriller

STXfilms has taken the North American and other foreign rights to the remake of the French thriller to be directed by Christian Carion.

Claire Foy and James McAvoy are set to star in My Son, the missing person thriller from ErosSTX Global Corp. and a remake of the 2017 French movie Mon Garçon.

French director Christian Carion will direct the English-language adaptation for STXfilms after he helmed the original French thriller that starred Guillaume Canet as a father who will do anything to get his young son back.

The My Son remake will see McAvoy play the father whose son goes missing, leading him to travel to the town where his ex-wife (Foy) lives in search of answers to the mystery.

To play a man who doesn’t know what’s ahead of him, McAvoy will not be given a script or dialogue. Instead, he will improvise on set as each scene unfolds, as was the case in the original French film, with the rest of the cast and crew for the English language remake being aware of the scenes.

“James will be doing the detective work of the film in real time, on camera, to create real tension for this thriller. We like to support bold and innovative storytelling like My Son, and Claire could not be a more spectacular or exciting choice for this film which is certain to thrill audiences,” Adam Fogelson, chairman of the STXfilms Motion Picture Group, said in a statement as he unveiled the project.

ErosSTX said STXfilms has taken the rights for the English-language remake for North America, the U.K., Italy, Benelux, Latin America, Spain, Australia and China. The film will begin production in early November in Scotland.

The My Son remake will be produced by Carion, Laure Irrman, Vincent Maraval, Brahim Chioua, Rebecca O’Brien and Marc Butan.

Mad River International represents the film’s foreign rights.

‘I’ve threatened to break the rules and kiss her’: Claire Foy and Matt Smith on acting in lockdown

‘I’ve threatened to break the rules and kiss her’: Claire Foy and Matt Smith on acting in lockdown

They’re separated by a two-metre stick but their chemistry is as strong as ever. The Crown stars on their socially-distanced take on Lungs; lockdown diets and naked drawings.

Claire Foy and Matt Smith are describing the odd experience of rehearsing a play while a stage manager holds a two-metre stick between them. The pair are preparing for a second run of Lungs, an intimate two-hander about the travails of modern coupledom that was first staged last year at the Old Vic in London. Their characters fought, made up and slept together on stage. This time, however, they won’t even be able to get within hand-holding distance of each other.

The stick is there to ensure that physical distance remains at all times in accordance with lockdown rules, Foy explains, adding that the stage manager, Maria Gibbons, beats them apart with it. Smith reminds her that the guidance for distancing has “just been reduced to one metre, so snap her stick in half!”

The two actors have a Tigger-ish enthusiasm in their conversational to-and-fro, even on a Zoom call at the end of a day of rehearsals. They first met six years ago on the set of Netflix hit The Crown. Foy had already got the part of young Elizabeth II and was in the room when Smith came in for his screen test. “She was very generous,” he says, “and there was something that worked about it.” They proved to have a remarkable chemistry and it is clear from their exuberant banter now that they spark just as well off-camera. They joke, tease and even finish each other’s sentences.

“We’re friends,” says Foy, “and after The Crown we said, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun if we did something together again?’ I didn’t know if anyone would let us and then we independently read this play and went, ‘Shall we just do it?’”

Lungs centres on a well-meaning, if smug, middle-class couple who talk about saving the planet and debate whether to have a baby or not. This production, performed in the theatre’s empty auditorium and filmed on Zoom, is live-streaming to audiences, to raise money for the Old Vic, which has been dark for over three-months and is in a precarious financial situation. This is the first in a new series of shows from the theatre, made to earn some income in lockdown. Matthew Warchus, the theatre’s artistic director and this show’s director, is also a seasoned film-maker, Foy points out, so he is doing some “very, very clever things into camera”.

Claire Foy looks back on her reign as Queen Elizabeth II

Claire Foy looks back on her reign as Queen Elizabeth II

By: Shirley Li

Claire Foy made Peter Morgan’s job easy. As Queen Elizabeth II on The Crown, the 33-year-old actress delivered a Golden Globe-winning performance the show’s creator says he depended on throughout the first two seasons of the Netflix period drama. “I don’t have to give her fireworks to make her feel like she’s the epicenter of everything,” he explains. “With Claire, you could push her in any direction. Her comic timing is good, her sense of tragedy is good…. No matter what we gave her to do, she would be able to do it, so that gave me enormous freedom as a writer.”

Though Foy departs the show along with the rest of its principal cast after season 2, she’s already scored her next role, as troubled hacker Lisbeth Salander in the Dragon Tattoo sequel The Girl in the Spider’s Web (slated for 2018). Here, she talks the end of her small-screen sovereignty. (Spoilers for The Crown season 2 ahead!)

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was it like saying goodbye to Elizabeth during your final scene?
CLAIRE FOY: It was surreal. It’s very difficult to prepare yourself for that moment. Ultimately what you end up feeling is just sort of confused and that you need to go home and have a lie-down, really.

Season 2 delves deeper into examining Elizabeth’s restraint, even while those around her fail her. What was the key to tapping into that?
I think the moments when Elizabeth really becomes angry is when she’s lied to. She’s been very disappointed by the men in her life for their lack of endurance. She feels left out, and what makes her angry more than anything else in the world is the sense that people aren’t trying their best.
